Financial Aid News

Congress has completed the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. The new act revises some of the federal student aid programs.

Key changes of interest include:

  • A new six-month grace period on GRAD PLUS loans, which are loans taken out by graduate or professional students.

  • A new one-time limit on the rehabilitation of defaulted student loans.

  • An expanded loan forgiveness program that includes all occupations considered areas of high national need. Eligible borrowers could qualify for up to $10,000 in loan forgiveness after working five years in one of the following occupations:

Early childhood educators; certain highly qualified teachers, school administrators, child welfare workers, speech-language pathologists and audiologists, occupational therapists, librarians, foreign language specialists, public safety, emergency management, public health and public interest legal services workers, and non-profit legal service attorneys. Public heath workers included nurses, medical specialists, physical therapists, mental health professionals, nutritional professionals, and dentists.
